Food bank on tour: Weilerswist collected Christmas presents – stopping at schools, daycare centres, church communities and Communio in Christo

Mechernich – Giving away cherished possessions is not always easy, especially for younger children. This makes what the children at the St. Johannes Baptist daycare centre have achieved all the more remarkable: for the big Christmas parcel campaign organised by Tafel Mechernich e. V.,(Food Bank Mechernich) the daycare children rummaged through their cupboards at home and found lots of toys, books and clothes that they wanted to give away. – To children who are not as fortunate as they are.

Wolfgang Weilerswist is responsible for ensuring that the lovingly selected gifts find new owners. The head of the food bank was eagerly awaited at the St. Johannes Baptist daycare centre. ‘Look, I brought my favourite shoes,’ Matthis announces proudly. Because they quickly became too small for the three-year-old, the beige shoes look like new.

‘Isn't that cute?’ Nursery teacher Carina Milz is touched. She has experienced moments like this often in recent days. ‘After we visited the food bank's premises with the preschoolers, they were eager to help.’ Numerous parents also responded to the Catholic kindergarten's appeal, donating plenty of food to fill the Christmas parcels, among other things. Unlike these, the sorted children's toys are offered to take away on the day of distribution, explains Wolfgang Weilerswist: ‘Then every child can take exactly what they like.’

Kids and parents were also busy at the Catholic primary school in Lückerath: 96 colourfully wrapped Christmas parcels were waiting for Wolfgang Weilerswist and his hard-working colleagues on Monday. There were so many that the children spontaneously formed a chain to carry the haul to the food bank van together.

Once again this year, the school communities of the Gymnasium am Turmhof and the Gesamtschule Mechernich were reliable partners, with a particularly large number of donors participating in the campaign. Together with teacher Kirsten Welsch, the student council worked hard to help Wolfgang Weilerswist collect the donations.

The good angels of the Communio in Christo Mechernich e.V. foundation, which has been reliably supporting the food bank since 2004, were also busy again. The fact that two boxes containing 50 packets of coffee each – lovingly packaged and decorated with golden stars – were ready for collection was thanks to Wolfgang Weilerswist and Father Rudolf Ammann, chairman of the Communio in Christo Mechernich e.V. association, which has supported the food bank since its foundation in 2004. ‘We can always rely on you!’
